Performance Validation of Two Side Impact Dummies

چکیده
The history of public domain finite element models of the side impact anthropometric test dummy are summarized and recent improvements are briefly discussed. The performance of the two most recent finite element models are discussed with respect to the predictions of acceleration time histories as compared to standard bench calibration tests as well as an in-vehicle full-scale vehicle crash test. The thoracic trauma indices and the maximum pelvis accelerations are calculated based on the finite element models and are compared to the results obtained in physical calibration tests. The responses and fidelity of the finite element models are discussed and recommendations for further improvements are provided. Development of Advanced HIII Abaqus dummies
Abstract: Hybrid III dummies are among the most frequently used dummies in both industry and academia for vehicle crash safety. Abaqus is one of most widely applied finite element codes in the world. To meet the needs of crash safety analysis and to exploit the potential of the Abaqus/Explicit code, a family of HIII dummies, including HII 50th male, 5th female and 95th male dummies, were develo...
متن کاملBiofidelity of an original and modified sidiis upper extremity matched cadaver and dummy compression tests.
Approximately 8,000 automobile occupants are killed and 24,000 seriously injured each year in automotive side impact collisions. In order to accurately predict injury of human occupants, the response of automotive side impact anthropometric test dummies must be as biofidelic as possible. The upper arm serves as a load path to the thorax, and the response characteristics of the upper arm can inf...
متن کاملTest Program to Define Oblique Chest Loading in Side Impact
Near side impact crashes – especially pole impacts – have the potential to induce antero-lateral oblique loads to the chest. Current side impact dummies and most laboratory experimental studies have been designed to assess direct lateral impacts. A recent analysis of real world crashes indicated that the human chest experiences oblique loading in side impact crashes – in particular crashes into...
متن کاملAssessment of Advanced Air Bag Technology and Less Aggressive Air Bag Designs through Performance Testing
On March 19, 1997, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a Final Rule amending FMVSS No. 208 to allow manufacturers to de-power air bags in their passenger vehicles. This is considered an interim solution to the problems associated with aggressive air bag deployments. Consequently, the amended rule has a sunset provision that removes the amendment, with the additi...
متن کاملHow Useful Are the Two Child Dummies in the Rear Seat of Ncap Testing?
This study aimed to investigate the utility of the responses of the two child dummies (P1.5 and P3) that are placed in the rear seat, in identical forwardfacing child restraints during frontal Australian NCAP (ANCAP) tests. Dynamic responses of the two child dummies, vehicle crash parameters, and frontal dummy responses were extracted from the ANCAP report database for 35 frontal crash tests. L...
